Our Newsroom

CommunityWire is a student-powered, faculty-led newsroom in the University of Miami’s Department of Journalism and Media Management. Housed in the U’s top-ranked School of Communication, CommunityWire was launched in Fall 2021 as a platform in which our students, guided by experienced journalism faculty, produce stories of interest to a wider audience across Miami and beyond.

We relaunched our website in Spring 2026, using an updated platform that will allow us to expand the quality and quantity of news stories, features and multimedia packages we offer to our local media partners. This relationship goes to the heart of what we do: Serving the community by offering evidence-based, public-interest reporting that matters, while helping to train the next generation of journalists in time-honored standards that don’t fade with advances in technology.  We are part of a growing nationwide movement of news-academic partnerships, in which student reporting helps support the local media ecosystem and stem the tide of news desertification.

Our news partners include WLRN, The Miami Herald, The Key Biscayne Independent and The Coconut Grove Spotlight. Over the next two years, we look forward to expanding the range of community news organizations which will regularly receive our latest content.

Media organizations are welcome to republish our stories, but must give credit to the writer and to CommunityWire.Miami. Upon request, we can provide text-only versions of stories, original photographs and videos that accompany many of our stories, or direct connections to our student writers. For inquiries, contact Ilene Prusher, CommunityWire’s editor-in-chief and graduate director for our Journalism MA program, at irp43@miami.edu

Our stories for Spring 2026 are being published in collaboration with Prof. Boriana Treadwell, an award-winning journalist and advisor to UMTV. Our podcasts are published with thanks to Prof. Trevor Green.

Our History

Community Wire has evolved and adapted over time. Its earliest iteration was The U/Miami News Service, launched by Professor Tsitsi Wakhisi in 1991. Under this name, our students’ bylines appeared in The Sun-Sentinel, Palm Beach Post, The Miami Times, Miami Today, the South Florida Times, and most regularly, The Miami Herald’s “Neighbors” section.  As the media landscape changes, so does our strategy. While we are digital-first, we continue to provide trusted content for both print and web publication. Our range of student writers is also shifting. While initially only graduate students worked for CommunityWire, we have begun to integrate undergraduates in this project. This offers opportunities for experience, publication and mentorship to a wider range of students.

OUR VISION

We are increasing the range of stories we offer to local news organizations by involving more of our most promising journalism students in CommunityWire. Going forward, we will also offer content from our award-winning student publications, The Miami Hurricane and Distraction magazine. Some of the stories on our site will also feature video components, produced in conjunction with UMTV, our school’s premier training ground that led to our being ranked by Niche as the No. 1 school in the nation for broadcast journalism for 2026.
